Responsibilities

James has extensive experience of advanced tax planning for high net worth individuals, family companies and entrepreneurs in the UK. In addition to 'pure' UK taxation advice James has a substantial caseload of international and cross-border work. This ranges from the creation of private family trusts offshore through to constructing complex cross-border trading structures. His innovative approach to tax planning has been widely recognised by the profession: for instance, the Legal 500 describes him as a 'very experienced' tax lawyer with commendable professionalism and responsiveness, who specialises in innovative tax-planning work.

James also represents clients who are subject to Inland Revenue investigations, particularly where issues of residence and domicile are in point. In addition to his tax planning work, James advises on UK and international trust law. This ranges from drafting trust documents through to advising trustees on difficult or contentious areas of trust law. In this respect, James has been retained by a number of respected institutional trustees, ranging from private trust companies through to large international banks.

Profile

After graduating with a First Class Degree in Law, James trained in a niche trusts and charity practice in London. Upon qualification James joined the renowned City offshore tax specialists Rooks Rider, where he worked in the firm's company commercial group providing international tax advice to individuals and companies. In 2000 he decided to leave London and joined what is now DMH Stallard, where he held the position of partner and headed the firm's tax, trust and probate group. In November 2003 he left DMH to join Thomas Eggar LLP as a partner.
