Adoption

Due to recent changes in the law, more people are now eligible to adopt children. Single people, married couples and same sex couples can all adopt children. The success of your adoption application will depend on your circumstances and the particular child who is being placed for adoption. It is a complicated area and we are happy to advise.

Unless you are the birth parent of the child you must be 21 or over in order to adopt. It is however possible for stepparents to adopt at a younger age.

Adoption law is evolving all the time. There is likely to be new legislation within the next Parliament and we are still finding out the effect of the new Human Rights legislation on adoption law generally.

There are alternatives to adoption, including special guardianship, residence and parental responsibility. We can advise you of the options available in your circumstances.
